Classical Florence Art Galleries

Florence Art Gallery Name: Galleria del Costume di Palazzo Pitti

Type: fashion history museum
Address: Palazzo Pitti, Piazza Pitti, 1; Ph. / Fax: 055-2388713.
Note: this is the most important and unique clothes and costumes museum in Italy and the world; it hosts thousands of beautiful ancient clothes, theatre costumes and accessories.

Florence Art Gallery Name: Galleria degli Uffizi

Type: painting (and some ancient sculptures) gallery
Address: Uffizi Loggia; 055-23881
Note: the most striking variety of beautiful master paintings; it started under the Medicis. We invite you to stop in front of the most impressive Renaissance painting: Botticelli's Primavera; this painting has all the features of the Renaissance: beauty, Nature, colours, celebration of life, man at the centre of all

Florence Art Gallery Name: Galleria Palatina e Appartamenti Monumentali

Type: painting gallery / royal rooms
Address: Palazzo Pitti, Piazza Pitti; 055-2388614 / 055 2388611.
Note: Renaissance / Baroque paintings displayed in such a way as to cover the walls of the rooms. We particularly love the portraits: beautiful photographs of the past by important artists, which still tell us about the way the nobles posed, dressed, and of what they represented in their times.

Florence Art Gallery Name: Galleria dell'Accademia

Type: sculpture and other objects gallery
Address: Via Ricasoli, 68/60; 055-2388612
Note: here is the David by Michelangelo: the humanistic representation of Man. But we are overwhelmed by Michelangelo's Prigioni: the painful strength of these men trying to get free from the marble is striking

Modern Florence Art Galleries

Florence Art Gallery Name: Galleria d'Arte Moderna

Type: XVIII to early XX century principally Italian paintings and some sculptures.
Address: Palazzo Pitti, Piazza Pitti, 1; 055-2388616.
Note: the collection started in the 1800's. It hosts neoclassical works, significant pieces with historical subjects of the Risorgimento, the important Macchiaioli (the Italian precursors of French Impressionism) pieces such as those by Fattori, Lega and Signorini and more modern ones, as those of the Futurists Balla and Marinetti.

Florence Art Gallery Name: Raccolta d'Arte Contemporanea Alberto Della Ragione

Type: XX century collection
Address: Piazza della Signoria, 5; 055-283078.
Note: 1930-40 artists, such as Guttuso; and De Chirico, Morandi, Casorati, Sironi, and sculptors as Manz and Fontana.

Florence Art Gallery Name: Galleria Rinaldo Carnielo

Type: collection of different 1800 styles
Address: Piazza Savonarola, 3; 055-575045.
Note: of sculptures, plaster works and bas-reliefs, located inside a beautiful Art Nouveau structure, the home and studio of Rinaldo Carnielo. It is under restoration at present.
