Theater Name: Teatro Comunale del Maggio Fiorentino

Theater Type: classical theatre

Note: this theatre was founded in the XIX century and soon became the cradle of one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world: the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, hosting since the beginning the legends of the opera, symphonic and classical ballet world. The festival is annual and hosts an international public from all over the world; it has a foundation, an orchestra, its ballet company and always offers interesting programmes for connoisseurs. Close to the theatre is the Nanamuta (Corso Italia, 35; ph. 055-2675612), a modern Tuscan cuisine restaurant for those who wish to have an after-show dinner.

Theater Name: Teatro della Pergola

Theater Type: classical theatre
Address: Via della Pergola, 18; 055-22641
Note: this is the oldest theatre in Florence and one of the oldest and historically richest theatres of Italy; it was built in the XVI century and had hosted, since then, some of the most important opera debuts of the history of classical music. It is here that the first foundations of the opera genre started, with the melodramaÖ and its name (Pergola)? It derived from an actual pergola, arbour that was close to the Santa Maria Nuova hospital. The theatre offers very good classical programmes and also theatrical pieces.

Theater Name: Teatro Verdi

Theater Type: classical / modern theatre
Address: Via Ghibellina, 99; 055 212320 - 055 2396242.
Note: this theatre was founded at the beginning of the XX century and was inaugurated with the Rigoletto opera by Verdi (it then took its name). The theatre is one of the most versatile of Florence: it shows interesting classical programmes and also many musicals and modern, pop, jazz and rock concerts.

Theater Name: Teatro Romano di Fiesole

Theater Type: open-air shows at the ancient Roman amphitheatre during the annual 'Estate Fiesolana' festival
Address: Teatro Romano - 055-59187.
Note: the annual festival hosts a variety of shows of different arts: classical and jazz music, cinema and prose, in a striking environment. The festival starts in June and ends in September and the shows are also presented in other ancient structures of the Fiesole municipality, such as the Cathedral, the Badia Fiesolana, the San Domenico Church and others.

Theater Type: open-air spectacles
Address: entrance from Porta Romana; ph. 055-2298732 / 2651838
Note: the beautiful gardens of the Pitti Palace host every year equally beautiful shows of opera, concerts and others. In the last three years the company Operafestival has organized such shows (ph. 055-5978309).

Theater Name: Teatro Puccini

Theater Type: Italian comedy, satyre and ìgenre pollutionî (as the theatre calls itself)

Note: it shows modern comedies, monologues, satyres, etc.
